The Indian Association for Radiation Protection (IARP) had conducted its 34th Biennial Scientific Conference as the National Conference IARPNC 2020 under virtual platform, during January 21–23, 2021, on the theme of “Radiation Safety in Nuclear and Core Industries, Health Care and Environment.” Nearly 300 participants from BARC, DAE Units, Academic Institutions, and other industries using radiation technology participated in the IARPNC 2020; on an average, nearly 200 participants took part in most of the scientific sessions.

IARPNC 2020 was inaugurated, presided over by Shri. Nageswara Rao Chairman, AERB as the Chief Guest, and Dr. D. Shrivatsava, CE, NFC as the Guest of Honour, at 1045 h on January 21, 2021. President, IARP Dr. B. Venkataraman, IGCAR, Vice President, IARP Dr. M. S. Kulkarni, HSEG, BARC, and Secretary, IARP Dr. S. Murali, RSSD, were the other participants who attended the inaugural session. A “Book of Abstracts” comprising all invited talk presentations, oral presentations, and poster presentations was released by the Chief Guest during the inaugural session. IARPNC 2020 Awards were distributed to the various “illustrious radiation safety experts,” and the oral presentation by the IARPNC 2020 Awardees was followed by a Special Lecture on “Radiation Safety at NFC Fuel Fabrication facilities” by Dr. D. Shrivatsava, CE, NFC.

There were 15 invited lectures on various topics – radiation safety at – front-end facilities, back-end facilities, radiation safety: future perspectives, radiation safety in operating Nuclear Power Plants (NPP), newer methodology in radiation monitoring, radiation dosimetry, newer trends in internal monitoring, evolving trends in environmental monitoring, radiation safety in industrial applications, newer radio-analytical techniques, radiation emergency preparedness, role of Crisis Management Group-DAE, regulatory framework at India as per the international codes/guides.

There were 38 oral paper presentations and 185 poster presentations. The posters were displayed in the E-Poster gallery, viewing option made available for the entire conference duration for participants. In all, the participants could get a glimpse of 250 papers – invited lecture topics, oral presentations, and poster presentations.

On the postlunch session of concluding day, a panel discussion was marked on “Radiation Safety: Public Perceptions” with expert members Dr. K. S. Pradeepkumar, Ex-President, IARP, Shri. D. K. Shukla, ED, AERB, Dr. B. Venkataraman, IGCAR, Prof. Karunakara, Mangalore University, and Dr. M. S. Kulkarni, Head, HPD. There were a lot of interactions with questions been addressed for response from various subject experts.

The concluding session was presided over by Dr. M. S. Kulkarni, Vice-President, IARP. He noted the successful conduct of the IARPNC 2020 thanking one and all, including the participants, organizers, and M/S Indiattitude, the virtual platform service provider. IARPNC 2020, as a virtual conference, was an enriching experience to all.
