The above draft report is now available at the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) site for public consultation. The last date for submission of comments on line is reported to be September 19, 2014.

The new applications of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is now used widely by specialists who have little or no training in radiological protection and the associated radiological protection issues are sufficiently different from those of conventional CT. Additional challenges to radiological protection are introduced when CBCT capable equipment is used for both fluoroscopy and tomography during the same procedure. There is a perception that CBCT involves lower doses. CBCT technology and applications continue to develop and there are no clear cut solutions on dosimetry aspects of the applications.

It was felt that there is a need for strengthening of advice on optimization of protection when using CBCT equipment, particularly with respect to the use of newer features of the equipment. Features, such as standardized radiation dose displays on CBCT equipment, mechanisms for tracking and reporting of patient radiation doses from the procedures assist users in optimization of protection and comparisons of performance.

As with previous ICRP publications, the Commission hopes that imaging professionals, medical physicists and manufacturers will utilize the guidelines and recommendations provided in this document for the implementation of the Commission's principle of optimization of protection of patients and medical workers with the objective to keep their exposures low as reasonably achievable, taking into account economic and societal factors, and consistent with achieving the necessary medical outcomes.
